Good Earth State Park

That’s the name Gov. Dennis Daugaard apparently has chosen for the state’s newest park, which everyone else simply has been calling Blood Run State Park.

Senate Bill 186 calls for the establishment of  Good Earth State Park at Blood Run in Lincoln County.

Why it can’t just stay Blood Run State Park, I don’t know.

I object to Good Earth State Park for two reasons:

1. The Good Earth is the name of a book by Pearl S. Buck that no one reads anymore, despite the fact it won a Pulitzer Park in 1932. At least, no one has read it since 2004 when Oprah chose it for her book club. I bet you can get a bargain on any copy of the book at a used-book store.

2. It sounds like the name Minnesotans would give a state park. Seriously.
