I don’t remember now who brought this song to my attention, but the title alone is enough to send my eyebrows soaring skyward: He Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss).
Then I really rolled backwards when I discovered it had been written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. It helps a little to hear King, who after her marriage to Goffin was the subject of spousal abuse, say she wishes she’d never had anything to do with the song.
It reminds me of the musical Carousel. I watched it several years ago, and the character played by Shirley Jones expressed the same sentiment. The attitude is just so wrong.
